By dropping resolution on its full-frame CMOS sensor to 18-megapixels (a compromise between the 1D Mark IV’s 16.1-megapixel APS-H sized sensor and the 1Ds Mark III’s 21.1-megapixel full-frame sensor), not to mention its new Dual Digic 5+ processors, the 1D X is able to shoot at even faster rates than the speedy 1D Mark IV—12 fps
Subsequently, the ten-million-pixel Canon EOS-1D Mark III, with its sub-full-frame (APS-H-sized) sensor, started to lose its appeal despite its 10fps shooting rate. Unfortunately for Canon, many professional photographers chose to switch systems and use Nikon equipment. Clearly, Canon has learned a few lessons in the intervening period.
Back in August 2005 Canon 'defined a new DSLR category' (their words) with the EOS 5D. Unlike any previous 'full frame' sensor camera, the 5D was the first with a compact body (i.e. not having an integral vertical grip) and has since then proved to be very popular, perhaps because if you wanted a full frame DSLR to use with your Canon lenses and you didn't want the chunky EOS-1D style body
In 2020, Canon introduced the EOS-1D X Mark III as a successor to the EOS-1D X Mark II. It uses a similar, but improved, 20.1 Megapixel CMOS image sensor. It is a stop higher in sensitivity and has lower noise, primarily due to a new and more powerful DIGIC X processor. Autofocus has been elevated on a number of fronts.

While the R3's 24 MP resolution is not high for a full-frame camera, the quality of those pixels is so high that it outperforms higher resolution models.
Featuring a newly designed 20.1MP full-frame CMOS sensor and updated DIGIC X image processor, the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III is capable of continuous shooting rates up to 16 fps with the optical viewfinder or 20 fps in live view, with a 1000-shot buffer when shooting raw+JPEG, and it has the ability to internally record 5.5K RAW video and
