PCT Contracting States and Two-letter Codes (157 on 1 December 2023) Extension of European patent possible. May only be designated for a regional patent (the “national route” via the PCT has been closed). Italy may be designated for a national patent only in international applications filed on or after 1 July 2020.
The International Organization for Standardization has other country codes. Somewhat impractical, due to hardly being legible, is the numeric variant, such as 840 for the United States. It is almost only used in information technology, where it is no longer important that the code be human readable. More common for this is the 2-letter code

The ISO 3166-1 codes have three alternative versions that can be used as needed: alpha-2 - a two-letter code e.g. US means United States of America, alpha-3 - three letter code, in the case of United States is USA, numeric code - a three-digit code padded by zeros, e.g. the USA code is 840.

Sometimes you might see the two-letter code WO; this refers to a publication from a PCT application (Patent Cooperation Treaty), which is the international patent system and stands for Written Opinion.
In Excel, I am trying to return the two-letter country codes from email addresses in column C (e.g. "fr" for France), but ignoring generic TLDs such as "com", "net", etc. I do not want to use only =RIGHT(C2,2) , which works OK, because this would return e.g. "om" from ".com" - "om" is the country code for Oman.
Current ISO 3166 country codes. The sortable table below contains the three sets of ISO 3166-1 country codes for each of its 249 countries, links to the ISO 3166-2 country subdivision codes, and the Internet country code top-level domains (ccTLD) which are based on the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 standard with the few exceptions noted.
These two-letter country codes usually coincide with their top-level domains, e.g. SE/.se, NO/.no, etc. There is one well-known exception: the country code GB has top-level domain .uk because .gb is now defunct.
The country/region is represented as a 2-character code based on ISO-3166. co — Country name (e.g. United States). Microsoft got really detailed on their description for this one.
